At the small airport, smiling copper-skinned islanders tossed purple flower lays around necks and drivers whisked tourists off to their lodgings. It was pitch black. I could hear the ocean outside my comfortable cottage at Hangaroa Hotel, but had to wait until dawn for my first glimpse of Easter Island.
