The first ones I spotted were from the plane -- black slabs sticking up like tombstones in a tawny, treeless landscape. As soon as I had settled into the hotel, where I had to borrow a broom to sweep away a harvest of freshly fumigated cockroaches, I walked up the coast from the village of Hanga Roa toward an archaeological complex called Tahai.
