Geography professor Jared Diamond cites the decline of civilization on Easter Island, in the Pacific Ocean, as metaphor for the possible decline of human civilization at large. A few centuries ago, the inhabitants of the island had consumed all their natural resources; unable to move, they warred amongst themselves, turned to cannibalism and eventually perished.
